2012-13 cohort biographies

Matt Beere is the Cinema and Live Arts Engagement Officer at Chapter Arts Centre. His work includes the fundraising, coordination and delivery of a variety of engagement projects both outreach and in-venue. In recent times he has become specialised in working with harder to reach groups of young people including work with Youth Offending Teams, Prisons and Community Projects. In the almost ten years that Matt has worked for Chapter he has also held the positions of Cinema Coordinator and Film Education Officer. Matt is also the co-founder and Director of Reel Education, and ACW and FAW funded organisation that has a Wales-wide remit for the designing and delivery of Film Literacy workshops to the mainstream and non-mainstrem education sectors.

  

Jack Brown was born in Stockport in 1979. He moved to London to study at London Guildhall University leaving in 2002 with a BA Honours in Fine Art. Jack is a multi-disciplinary socially engaged artist. Jack makes work with other people, he works collaboratively with other artists, teaches, consults, co-curates and leads public realm projects. Currently working as artist in residence at Tidemill Primary School, consulting artist to APT (Deptford), The Saatchi Gallery and Bigfoot education, Jack is also a member of Exchange Projects and Figure Ground. He curates the education programme for the Hackney Wicked Festival.

 
Ros Croker recently worked at Thames Festival Trust, managing informal and formal learning programmes, including working in partnership with the British Council on Rivers of the World and currently works as the Education Curator at the Royal Institute of British Architects. She has broad experience of developing and managing formal and informal education projects across visual arts, architecture and heritage sectors for different organisations including Saatchi Gallery, English Heritage and Open-City. She has worked freelance in partnership with Office Sian Architects delivering workshops at the ICA, evaluating education programmes for Flow Associates at National Maritime Museum and V&A and as a Volunteer Project Manager and Artist in India for Raleigh International. 

 
Emily Druiff has worked as an independent curator with particular interest in participatory practice, new media and art in the public realm since graduating from MA Curating from Goldsmiths in 2005. In 2007 she become Director of Peckham Space, located on Peckham Square, London SE15 and part of Camberwell College of Arts, University of the Arts London, it seeks to encourage progression routes for young people into creative higher education as well as increase access to cultural and educational. Commissioned artists have so far include Barby Asante, David Cotterrell, Jessica Voorsanger, Harold Offeh, Gayle Chong Kwan, Sonia Boyce, Nikolaj Larsen and David Blandy. 

Anna Francis is an artist whose practice examines private histories, public space and civic languages; using forms of intervention, mapping, performance, consultation and photography to investigate the impact of art and culture on the regeneration of cities. Anna is a Director at AirSpace Gallery, Stoke-on-Trent s contemporary, artist led exhibiting space, where she has particular responsibility for the education and outreach programmes. Anna Francis is course leader on the BA Fine Art at Staffordshire University. 

 
Johnny Gailey has worked in community arts and gallery education in Scotland since 2000. He was the Education and Exhibitions Officer at An Tuireann Arts Centre on the Isle of Skye, before moving to Edinburgh. From 2005 until 2011, he ran The Fruitmarket Gallery s programme of activities for children and young people. Between 2009 and 2011, he project-managed the Lottery-funded Air Iomlaid (On Exchange) educational project, working with over 100 primary pupils at depth, which resulted in an acclaimed exhibition at The Fruitmarket Gallery (Edinburgh) and was nominated for the Clore Learning Award 2011. Johnny has written for publications and contributed to national debates and sectoral development via advisory work. He is a member of the engage Scotland Development Group, and sits on the Glasgow Sculpture Studios Programme Advisory Group. In 2011, Johnny programmed the engage International conference, held in Margate, Kent, bringing together practitioners, artists and academics from across the world to discuss participation. 

 
Susan Humble grew up in Girvan on the West Coast of Scotland, where her parents ran a sweetshop and newsagent. As a child she was fond of building prototypes, which she felt was a suitably fancy name for an invention which didn t work. After graduating from ECA, she ran workshops on a freelance basis for young people and young parents. She completed a Masters jointly with Glasgow University and GSA in Art, Design and Architecture in Education, awarded with Distinction. Susan has worked as Education Officer with North Edinburgh Arts and as the Audience Development Officer at Artlink since 2008. 

 
Rikki Payne graduated from the University of Essex in 1996 with an MA in Contemporary Theatre Practice. As a musician, performer and community theatre director, he worked in Oxford, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and the Balkans. In 2003 he co-founded Tyger Tyger and worked on community regeneration projects in Palestine. He is now the Creative Links Officer for Inverclyde Council, producing high quality arts education projects in partnership with artists and educators. He also sits on the project group at the Burgh Hall in Dunoon, guiding the transformation of the building from derelict shell to vibrant, community arts venue. 

 

Rachel Thibbotumunuwe
works as Assistant Curator (Equality and Diversity) at the Talbot Rice Gallery, The University of Edinburgh. Prior to this appointment in 2011, Rachel has worked in a variety of roles to develop equalities, education and participation through her work with Peacock Visual Arts, The Lemon Tree, The Lighthouse and Stills. Her recent work with Street Level Photoworks in Glasgow brought a range of new audiences to the gallery through the development of online resources, bespoke gallery based events and hands on workshops. Rachel graduated from the department of Fine Art Photography, Glasgow School of Art in 1998. 

 
Lala Thorpe is an experienced Arts Project Manager who has managed a wide range of UK and International artists and arts projects for galleries, arts venues and schools. She has managed projects in the visual arts, literature, poetry, film, theatre, music, dance and site-specific installations in a variety of contexts with a broad range of audiences and participants. She has experience of project evaluation and report writing and has developed successful fundraising bids. Lala also works as an arts educator and has independently managed Artescape, a Saturday arts programme for primary aged children, for seven years. She is currently studying a part-time MA: Artists Teacher and Contemporary Practice at Goldsmiths University. 

 
Laura Travis has worked for Museums Sheffield for over four years and in that time has seen considerable change within the learning team and the wider organisation. She has risen from being a schools learning co-ordinator with responsibility for five staff and two sites to managing four sites and 24 people. Her role has recently changed again to cover all aspects of the learning programme and not just school learning. Laura has a degree in Marine Biology and a PGCE in KS2/3 Science. Prior to working for Museums Sheffield she worked mainly for environmental or outdoor education providers. 

 
Andrew Vaughan is a practising visual artist graduating from Loughborough College of Art in Fine Art painting in the early 1990s. A qualified teacher, Andrew specialises in gallery learning and has managed the learning programme at the Whitworth Art Gallery, the University of Manchester for the last decade. Over the last 17 years he has worked in a diverse range of educational settings as a creative consultant, facilitator and workshop leader specialising in whole school creative curriculum development, learning outside the classroom, museum and gallery education, pupil voice and reflective practice through learning journals and sketchbook methodologies. Andrew s learning work aims to inspire participants to make meaningful personalised learning connections through a creative and reflective approach that ignites imaginations, innovation and curiosity.


Nadia Wazera has worked continually across the arts sector in contracted roles, as a freelance Arts Educator and a practicing artist since 2003. This includes working as the Events Officer at Leamington Spa Art Gallery & Museum and working with Coventry Artspace for several years. Nadia has established a variety of partnerships including Coventry Indoor Market, Coventry Youth Service and the Mead Gallery. Nadia is often employed to build relations and support hard to reach groups, new audiences, families, teachers and disadvantaged people, through arts practice. Nadia also works in an advisory capacity developing arts and fundraising strategies.  

 
Kithmini Wimalaskera currently works at the National Maritime Museum on family learning. Her practice includes creating participatory activities that create access to the collection through the visual and performing arts. Her work also includes curating public events to celebrate and explore the cultural legacies of British maritime trade and migration, and collaborating with colleagues on digital learning and gallery development. Her interests lie in diversity, and developing the social role of museums and galleries. Kithmini is at a stage in her career where she wants her practice to have an impact and legacy. She wants to have the knowledge and skills to take her career forward and shape her vision for learning.
