Generation ART opened in January 2016 at two Leicester venues simultaneously - New Walk Museum and Art Gallery and Soft Touch Arts.

Throughout January and February both venues hosted a series of free interactive events and activities inspired by the exhibition, encouraging local audiences, especially families, to get involved. These included artist-led activities with Untitled Play and Kate Owen in the Generation ART studio spaces.
The exhibition also included a new Generation ART commission by artist Sian Watson Taylor.

Coordinated by The Spark Arts for Children and in collaboration with young people from Soft Touch Arts, the commission resulted in an installation of cubed Perspex sculptures, capturing the response of young people to the artworks on display, and a ‘conversation booth’ where visitors can share their ideas and feelings about the project. Carmel Ashberry-Sharpe, based at Soft Touch Arts, acted as an Evaluation Champion for the project and compiled a blog during the time that the exhibition was on show at the venue - click here to read.
Laura Hadland, Senior Curator at Leicester Arts & Museums said:
"Generation ART has provided audiences with an accessible, dynamic exhibition accompanied by a top-class activity programme. This has meant that our visitors became active participants in the exhibition, instead of merely passive viewers. Visitors had the opportunity to do their own making and creating within the space, and the exhibition continued to grow as their artworks were added to the studio gallery walls. For New Walk Museum, this has had the immediate impact of encouraging more youth entries to our Open Exhibition."
