Engage South East Area Group meeting 4 July 2017
Engage South East Area Group Meeting
Tuesday 4 July 2017, 14.00 – 16.30
Towner Art Gallery, Eastbourne
How can galleries work effectively with schools?
98% of schools in England will see per pupil funding cut by £3 billion a year by 2020, according to the National Audit Office. How can we as gallery educators, respond to the current and predicted national educational landscape in schools? What are the limits and potential of our role within this context? Join us for a meeting at Towner Art Gallery to discuss approaches and opinions as to how as gallery educationalists we might work most effectively with schools in the future.
Marina Castledine, Head of Learning, Towner Art Gallery will lead the discussions and present about the current programmes led by the gallery. In particular, Marina will present a review of the seven year-long ‘Annual Schools Competition’, which continues to attract audiences and the extensive schools’ consultation that has taken place, as the starting point for further discussions and responses from all attending.
The session will be an opportunity to talk together about the challenges we are currently facing when working with schools and a surgery to consider potential actions for the future.
The meeting will start with an introduction and tour of the current exhibitions:
Becky Beasley: Ous, Ravilious & Co: The Pattern of Friendship and the Sussex Open 2017.
