In and Out of the Silver Cube: photography education and the Arts Council too

This publication covers themes still discussed in photography education today, such as photography's accessibility and ‘flexibility', participatory practice, authorship issues, documentary styles, and where/how we encounter photography.

Re-reading it I was particularly struck by Helen James’ article on photography
organisations and their education provision. James, who once had my role at Photoworks, compares approaches, noting subtle but fundamental differences in skills based activity, professional development, image analysis, social change programmes. She identified an interesting shift from photography as a subject towards its use as a tool for wider learning, and raised significant questions on the need for specialist educators.

I have a
particular interest in the role education programmes play in shaping organisational identity. The article is 14 years old, but still just as relevant
