Carmen Mörsch in response to ‘If the museum is the gateway, who is the gatekeeper?’ Bernadette Lynch in Engage 11: Inclusion Under Pressure:
I appreciated the double meaning of that title. It beautifully highlighted the double bind of social justice issues in museum and gallery education. With her clear analysis of power structures, Lynch provided new knowledge for me. She voiced concerns I had carried around with me but was not able to articulate as poignantly. Reading this article was energising, I used it in my teaching for years.
Today, with more Black diasporic protagonists in the field, the ‘good practice’ example Lynch uses in the text appears a bit patronising. But sixteen years ago, the article provided convincing arguments for a re-distribution of power in the institution.
Unfortunately, regarding this demand, the text is still timely, possibly even more than when it came out.
