Kaija Kaitavuori in response to Claire Doherty ‘The institution is dead! Long live the institution!’ in Engage 15: Art of Encounter (Summer 2004):
In 2004 the Museum of Contemporary art Kiasma, where I worked as the head of education, had been open for six years. After the bustling first years, we were re-thinking our work, especially regarding the role of our audiences. The theme of the issue, Art of encounter, felt timely and important.
Based on the number of my underlinings and notes in the margins, the most inspiring article was Claire Doherty’s text on new institutionalism. Referring to recent publications and events, including one in my own institution, she gave a critical overview of changes in the landscape of producing and exhibiting contemporary art.
The article was one of the early analyses of relational versus socially engaged practice in connection with visitor experience, education and exhibition programming.
