Engage International Conference 2018

Fringe Programme

The Engage Conference Fringe offers colleagues the opportunity to explore Manchester and see what the city has to offer in terms of visual arts, culture and education.

The programme of visits, talks and workshops has been organised by local organisations in partnership with Engage and is designed to compliment the conference theme and is open to anyone to book a place, whether they are attending Conference or not.

Please note that you do not need to be a delegate in order to attend fringe events.


Booking is essential as capacity is limited and places will be allocated on a strict first come, first-served basis.
There is a £5 charge to attend each event. 
Deadline for bookings is 12 noon Thursday 1 November.

WORKSHOP: Take Notice - Art and Mindfulness

Manchester Art Gallery, Moseley Street, Manchester, M2 3JL

 

 

An introduction to mindfulness, why it is good for our health and wellbeing and how to apply it to engaging with art.

TALK: A Critical Combination? Exploring the terms of knowledge exchange between gallery education and Arts in Health at Manchester Institute for Research and Innovation in Art and Design

Manchester Metropolitan University, First Floor, The Righton Building, Cavendish Street, Manchester M15 6BG

 

 

This event explores the challenges as well as the opportunities presented by the stronger links being forged between gallery education and Arts in Health. A mixture of people drawn from the arts, education and health alike (and many who combine within their practice all these backgrounds and roles) discuss the affinities and tensions to which these categories of practice give rise and what kinds of integrations which make the best fits’ and why. 


This event is hosted by a new research network, Critical Arts in Heath (CAHN). The session will finish with tea and cake.

TALK: Handle with Care: Artists working collaboratively with looked after young people in The Turnpike Pottery, the 2018 ARMA commission

WORKSHOP: Dance for Parkinson's Workshop with English National Ballet

Experience an English National Ballet Dance for Parkinson’s session at Z-Arts, inspired by the company’s repertoire with live musical accompaniment

WORKSHOP: Bury Art Museum Sketchbook Social Workshop

The Horsfall @ 42nd Street, 87 Great Ancoats Street, Manchester, M4 5AG

 

 

A representation of what we do at Bury Art Museum to encourage everyone to enjoy drawing. An example of which, is the Friday art group which used to be Choices run by the NHS. This will include Sketchbook Social where there will be an activity of making a small fold out book and an activity based on projects, such as Thank Art It’s, which will involve drawing model/s in costume.

TALK & EXHIBITION: VENTURE ARTS COLLECTIVE

Venture Arts, 43 Old Birley Street, Manchester, M15 5RF

 

 

Venture Arts are holding a VA Collective event around visual arts and disability. Alongside an exhibition, Venture Arts learning disabled artists’ will talk about how their wellbeing, confidence and recognition in the contemporary art world has improved through involvement in Venture Arts programming, both in the studio and in cultural venues across Manchester.

TALK: And Breathe...

Manchester Art Gallery, Moseley Street, Manchester, M2 3JL

 

An introductory talk to And Breathe... an exhibition exploring the relationship between art, mindfulness and positive mental health co-curated by Greater Manchester Mental Health Service Users, Manchester Mind and Charlestown Community Primary School. Led by Louise Thompson, Health and Wellbeing Manager at Manchester Art Gallery. 

 

10 - 11AM

WORKSHOP: Integrated Mindfulness using the Whitworth's collection & Alice Kettle's Thread Bearing Witness

The Whitworth, Oxford Road, Manchester M15 6ER

 

 

Connect with textiles using mindfulness to pay more attention to the present in the gallery and your own thoughts.  Find out more about how the Whitworth uses mindfulness to enhance wellbeing and build resilience.

Curated by The Horsfall’s Creative Agents (a group of young people interested in the relationship between culture and mental health who inform programming at The Horsfall), this exhibition is a retrospective of work to date and young people’s aspirations for future projects.
