Summary

Join us to explore the challenges of effectively working with the emotive subject of race, slavery, imagery and its impact, specifically focusing on the role that portraits, and the National Portrait Gallery Collection in particular, can play in supporting teaching in the classroom. Key speakers talk exclusively to teachers about their work, raising questions and offering strategies and lines of enquiry for the classroom (including use of language and creative approaches to sensitive history).

Guest Speakers:

Simon Frederick – Artist, Photographer and Filmmaker. Artist of the Gallery's recent major photographic acquisition and director of recent four part BBC series Black is the New Black

Dr Katie Donington - Post-doctoral Research Associate (The Antislavery Usable Past) at the Centre for Research in Race and Rights. Writer who has published academic and popular work on slavery, memory, identity, public history and representation.

Jean Campbell – Artist Educator and Trainer. Her work focuses on working with sensitive histories including Transatlantic Slavery.

Open to all interested teachers and educators.
