Deadline extended: ARMA 2025 is open for applications from UK-based visual arts organisations until 10am, 16 August 2024
The Awards will support 3 organisations to commission artists across the UK to deliver participatory art activity in 2025 with children and young people focussed on wellbeing, culminating in an artwork or artworks.
ARMA is a unique opportunity for collaborative learning between artists, visual arts engagement specialists and teachers/educators, to develop innovative creative practices that support the wellbeing and resilience of young people. Whereas previous iterations of the Award have supported sole-artists with participatory art commissions, the 2025 Awards will support three artist commissions in host organisations, and will include a training and peer learning programme commencing in October 2024 for the artists and partners and result in a touring exhibition/display in 2026.
Colleagues across the UK in visual arts organisations, including galleries and art museums, are invited to submit proposals to host an ARMA artist commission in 2025 supported by the Max Reinhardt Charitable Trust. Three organisations across the UK will receive an Award of up to £7,000 to support a dedicated programme of visual arts engagement and wellbeing activity with children or young people.

Until 2021, ARMA comprised of an artist participatory/education project culminating in an artwork or artworks. From 2005, artists undertook residencies in NHS hospitals through a programme coordinated by Paintings in Hospitals. From 2010, the artist residency programme was coordinated by The Art Room, an organisation that works with art and artists to support vulnerable young people. Engage, the National Association for Gallery Education is delighted to have been running ARMA since 2012. The Award has been made bi-annually since 2016.
Artist Beth Shapeero was selected for ARMA 2021 at The Tetley, Leeds; Lindsey Mendick completed ARMA 2018 at The Turnpike, Leigh; Alison Carlier, ARMA 2016 at aspex, Portsmouth; Anne Harild, ARMA 2015 at the Bluecoat, Liverpool; in 2014, Maria Zahle was hosted by New Walk Museum and Art Gallery, Leicester and in 2013, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva was at mima, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art.
