About this issue:
Issue 46 of the Engage Journal is called Generation Z and the Future of Creative Work and focuses on the future workforce of visual arts engagement and participation and the wider engagement programmes and progression routes that develop creative careers in our sector.
This Journal debates the changing needs, creative pathways, and opportunities with and for young people today – collectively known as Generation Z – through three framing sections: Analysis, Action, and Empathy. This edition concentrates on the UK and Ireland and includes essays, conversations, checklists, and manifestos that explore and expand the future structure of our profession.
Generation Z is now widely used to reference those born after 1997 and up to 2012 so broadly speaking those who are 10 to 25, following Generation X and Millennials (the Y), coming of age with a distinct set of contemporary socio-economic and political factors, including the global pandemic, popularist politics, and the climate crisis.
This Journal will be launched with special events and has a new accompanying podcast series in Autumn 2022.
This issue of the journal came from two sources. One was a wish to explore in more depth questions which have hovered over the enquire programme: What do artists have to offer young people in projects brokered by galleries or other art organisations? Which artists choose this sort of work, and how does it relate…

This issue of the journal came from two sources. One was a wish to explore in more depth questions which have hovered over the enquire programme: What do artists have to offer young people in projects brokered by galleries or other art organisations? Which artists choose this sort of work, and how does it relate to the rest of their practice? What kind of mediation is required in different contexts? This dovetailed with the desire of Emily Pringle and Vivienne Reiss, longstanding researchers in this area, to extend their enquiry.
