About this issue:

Recent high profile events and exhibitions have been dedicated to placing the old and the new in the same space. This issue explores the challenges and opportunities that historical collections or exhibitions present. It reveals that contemporary art figures prominently in the thinking of art professionals about the historical. In every contribution to this issue, contemporary art is part of the interpretive, curatorial or educational strategy under discussion. Hence the overarching question addressed in this volume could be re-framed as: How can the art of the present reconfigure our understanding of the past?
