Great news for Engage Scotland: Creative Scotland Open Project funding secured for 2017-18 programme

Engage is delighted to announce that the organisation will receive £40,000 from the National Lottery through Creative Scotland’s Open Project Fund, to deliver a programme of support and development for gallery educators and visual arts professionals across Scotland, during 2017-18. A particular focus during this period will be supporting good practice in engaging young people with the visual arts in the lead up to 2018 Year of Young People.

Engage’s programme in Scotland is delivered by a Scotland-based Coordinator and responds to training and networking needs within gallery education with a Scottish focus. Highlights of its programme in Scotland over the last two years include:

• A series of events, training opportunities and seminars, dealing with subjects including improving access to galleries and the visual arts for people with autism, working with visually impaired people, engaging hard to reach young people and measuring social impact.

• The Engage International Conference 2015, A Different Game: Young people working with art and artists, which took place in Glasgow

• A range of professional development opportunities for Scottish participants at the Engage International Conference, Engage International Summer School and Tate Exchange, and as part of Extend, Engage’s UK-wide cross-arts leadership programme.

Sarah Yearsley, Engage Scotland Coordinator, said:

“This funding is great news for gallery educators and those involved in learning in the visual arts in Scotland. It means that Engage can continue to offer its well-respected programme of support, networking, research, training and professional development".

Janie Nicol, Freelance Artist, President of Scotish Artists Union and Engage Council Member said:

"This good news about continuing support from Creative Scotland reinforces the important role Engage Scotland plays as a provider of professional development and networking opportunities for artists and practitioners, and those working within gallery education throughout Scotland. In the current political climate that is increasingly harsh for those working in the arts, it is particularly important that organisations like Engage continue to support the visual arts community."

Stephen Palmer, Visual Arts Officer at Creative Scotland, said:

“We are pleased to be able to support the work of engage Scotland in developing and sharing best practice in the visual arts. Following on from the Visual Arts Sector and Creative Learning Reviews, we look forward to working with engage Scotland in helping to realise some of the next steps and supporting the ambitions of the sector.”

Jane Sillis, Director of Engage, said:

"Engage offers vital support and professional development opportunities to gallery educators across the UK and we are delighted to receive support for Engage Scotland’s work over the next year. Support from Creative Scotland enables gallery and visual arts education practice in Scotland to flourish and for practice in Scotland to be shared with colleagues across the UK."

Engage Scotland in 2017

Engage Scotland’s programme for 2017 is shaping up nicely with an ongoing focus on good practice in engaging young people alongside supporting work on improving the visibility of disability within gallery programmes, a networking opportunity for teaching artists and gallery educators during Edinburgh International Art Festival and a workshop on innovative practice in arts and health at the Museums Galleries Scotland Conference in Edinburgh in October.
