Save the date - Engage Cymru Dementia Friendly Galleries Training

Thursday 19 July 2018, Oriel Myrddin, Carmarthen
Friday 20 July 2018, Glynn Vivian Art Gallery, Swansea

Dementia Friendly Galleries is one full day’s professional development training aimed at visual artists, gallery staff and anyone involved in delivering visual arts-based activity with people living with dementia and their carers. It will be led by experts in the field and include Dementia Friends training led by the Alzheimers Society. It will also include a follow up learning and sharing session in the Autumn.

There is growing evidence that social and cultural organisations - large and small - have the potential to improve quality of life for people living with dementia, their families and carers. The visual arts have a significant part to play in how we care for and enrich the lives of people as they age, and new research has led to the development of a handbook to guide artists wanting to explore the relevance of the visual arts in gallery settings.

The artists handbook - Dementia & Imagination: Research Informed Approaches to Visual Arts Interventions - forms the basis of training offered by Engage Cymru and facilitated by members of this research team to explore critical ingredients, principles and practice to deliver safe and stimulating arts-based projects for people living with dementia. Led by Dr Gill Windle from Bangor University and Clive Parkinson from Arts for Health at Manchester Metropolitan University and facilitated by artists Chris Lewis-Jones and Sian Hughes, this is a unique opportunity for artists to refine and develop their skills in this important social arts practice.

Booking will open soon.
