Artists as Learners was a pilot training programme for artists developed by Engage Cymru in 2013 in response to identified sector need for a greater number of visual artists with the skills to work with challenging and disadvantaged young people. It was funded by the Arts Council of Wales, with match-funding from the four project partners and a course fee.
Artists as Learners was developed by the Engage Cymru Coordinator, with support from sector professionals. A six-day format was devised, consisting of:
- A full-day workshop delivered by Unitas Cymru exploring formal aspects of planning and running projects with hard to reach young people
- A planning day for the artist-mentees and lead artists at the host gallery
- The delivery of a 3-5 session visual arts project for a group of young people
- An end-project sharing and reflection session
The project partners were Denbighshire Arts Service, Oriel Mostyn in Llandudno, Ceredigion Museum and Art Gallery in Aberystwyth, and Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea.
